The Sunday Morning Sermon

"Pastor," the person asked, "how do you prepare relevant sermons each week?" Good question. Normally, I follow a twelve–step process.

      I read the passage.

      I pray the passage.

I study the passage in the original Greek language.

I relate the passage to other sections of the Bible.

I view the passage through 5 to 12 commentaries. A commentary seeks to explain the meaning of the passage.

I examine the passage in theological books.

I peruse the passage in printed sermons.

      I theme the passage.

I outline the passage in the how–to–live way.

I correlate the passage with personal experiences, periodical articles, historical events, and current happenings.

      I live the passage.

I write the passage in sermonic form.

II Timothy 4:2, "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine."

I Corinthians 9:16, For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!

II Corinthians 4:5, "For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake."

II Timothy 4:2, "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine."

Acts 20:27, "For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God."
